This past summer, Salal Credit Union was honored to have the opportunity to continue our support for the University of Washington’s Nurse Camp. UW Nurse Camp is a community-driven program, funded through donations and operated by volunteers.
The camp’s goal is to nurture and develop a diverse group of future nurse leaders who are dedicated to helping those in need. Nurse Camp is free for participants, making it accessible for those who might not have other opportunities to delve into nursing. Participation in the camp is open to high school sophomores and juniors who are 16 years or older. Around half of the camp’s attendees aspire to be the first in their families to go to college.
UW Nurse Camp offers students a comprehensive week of educational activities related to nursing. Campers get the opportunity to shadow nurses at both UW Medical Center Northwest and UW Medical Center Montlake. They undergo CPR and HIPAA training, learn about infection control, hand hygiene, vital sign measurements, and get insights on college preparation for nursing school.

The camp also provides hands-on experience in the School of Nursing learning and simulation lab and the WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare (WISH) Lab. Students engage in “speed rounds” to meet nurses from various healthcare sectors and tour the UW Seattle campus. Additionally, they receive mentorship from nursing students, make new friends, and get free UW School of Nursing gear.
